My husband and I are off skiing in Bulgaria in January. We have booked ski school for 5 days while we're out there (yes, we're new to it) so we're already sorted for skis and boots. We went out to look for ski jackets and trousers/salopettes today - obviously we need those - but I was wondering if someone could give me a checklist of the other things we will need to take with us. I have no idea what is necessary and what is optional.

Starting at your feet you're going to need 5-8 pairs of wool socks. Microfiber is best because they wick really well and also keep your feet toasty. Try Smartwool socks.
You may want to consider an Apres-Ski (after skiing) boot for walking around the resort village or to and from your hotel. Northface makes somes great ones (in mens and womens)
For you bottoms you are going to want to find some long johns to wear. One of my favorite companies is Hot Chillys. This company has different types of long johns with different cold-ratings. A lot of their stuff is really fuzzy and comfortable too. It is possible to wear nothing under your ski pants, but in January you are definitely going to want that extra layer because it provides a lot of warmth. You will need ski pants (or salopettes) obviously and a jacket. I would suggest purchasing a lighter jacket that you can wear under your ski jacket as another layer. Something like a fleece or a sweatshirt and then below that you should wear and long johns top. Never wear cotton next to your skin. It will get wet from perspiration or from snow and it won't dry or wick away from your body and you will be cold and miserable. The long johns will do the wicking that you need. You will need gloves or mittens for your hands and glove liners are suggested. Keep in mind that mittens will be warmer than gloves if you are concerned about the temperature. It is suggested that you take more than one pair of gloves/mittens because they will get wet and if you can't dry them properly over night you are going to have some very unhappy hands the next day. You will want a NeckUp (made by TurtleFur) or otherwise type of face mask to protect your face. You will also want to have a hat or earmuffs or headband to keep your ears warm. If you are skiing I always suggest a ski helmet for safety's sake. You will need some form of eye protection either sunglass or ski goggles. Ski goggles are great because they fit to your face and eliminate wind and and also many lenses are polarized and help increase visibility and eye protection. Don't forget sunscreen if you are someone that burns easily. A lot of people forget about it because it is winter time but the glare off of the snow and the higher altitudes mean that you will get a tan.

Hello, I was hoping that there may be some one out there that can give me some advice on what gear I need to buy for 2 adults and 2 daughters (age 12 and 14) for a skiing holiday next easter. A long way off I know, but I thought that if I had a list of everything that I need I can get it gradually and spread the cost. I realise that we will need ski jackets, socks, and trousers, but that is as much as I know. Any advice on what to get would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
